Snare Town
I picked up this snare I'd been lusting over:
http://www.gretschdrums.com/?fa=snaresub&sid=623#
Gretsch 9-ply Rosewood 8x14
This thing is a monster. It makes this unmistakable low, wet, fatback snare tone. I bottomed the tuning and the snare wires out and its like I fell into a swampy, funky soul groove. This is a must own. Amazing.

We're currently ranked #1 by this fan thing that I don't really know a lot about, but it is very flattering. It's interesting how it took me until yesterday to realize that I don't play a crash cymbal at all in this tune. It always blew my mind how Matt Chamberlain didn't lay into a single crash in The Wallflowers' tune "One Headlight," but now I see how it just sort of happens. I guess thats what its like when you play "for the song." No agenda. Just music.

I'll be with Beatles For Sale this upcoming Thursday, the 15th at Melting Point in Athens with Gimme Hendrix, the Jimi Hendrix tribute band. Come out dressed in your best 60's get up!
The Beatles crew will again back Cindy Wilson for a set as Ola Moon for the High Museum of Art on August 2nd. It is a private event however, unless you're one of the big donors to the High. If thats the case, hope to see you there!

Fastback
A part of me really wonders if there is a huge Steve McQueen or classic Mustang fan in the Black Panther division at Mapex. It's probably more likely that the word sounds cool. Either way, this snare is pretty interesting.
It shows up looking perfectly petite. Small but not too small. At 7x12, its also highly unique. The finish is a nice blend of ideals as well. It's a nice honey-browish-tan burst that is spread out well over the depth. This is a point that normally irritates me heavily, but I guess its just how I think a burst should look. The new hardware, vents, throwoff, and (adjustable!) buttplate all look amazing. Mapex also debuted their new hoops for these drums and they are amazing. They are triple-flange but with a bulge at the top that gives them a slightly stiffer, die-cast sort of sound. I love them for that reason, they feel sturdy and you get this die-cast form of sound, but with the triple flange feel.
The throwoff is amazing. It effortlessly smooth and is just a simple drop down. I prefer that on this drum particularly because the depth of the maple shell elicits such a musical tone from the drum....and then BAM with the lift of your left leg, you're back in snare country. The really great thing about this drum is that it sits well in the gamut of ranges AND it really allows you a lot of flexibility in the snare tension department. With MISFORTUNE500, I have a certain drum sound and I try to keep that as I definitely feel that its an integral part to trying the songs together. That said, I use a lot of snare tension adjustment to allow me some play room in my snare sound to make the transition from Of A Map to A Ready Defense and all those in between.
I'm still rocking the stock heads, as Mapex elects to put a REAL Remo Coated Ambassador and an Ambassador Hazy on the drum out of the factory with the Black Panther Logo. Value is something that comes in droves with this line of snares. I think that is what is most amazing about it. I looks great. Feels great. Sounds pretty damn nice. When a Brady 7x12 costs about $900, granted they are great drums, its hard for me to justify the purchase on such a strange size.
The Fastback from the reworked, retooled, and redesign Black Panther line is a great value. Quality solid hardware that isn't maddeningly heavy. Wonderful, new innovative hoops and solid heads from the factory under them. Versatility to boot. The only things to think about is to make sure you like that ringy sound from your snare. At 7", the ring factor feels exponentially increased from 6.5", but I'd say part of that is from the diameter. The diameter is the only other thing to note. Solid cross-sticking just isn't going to happen. But I love this snare.

Snaretown!
I'm not sure who has been paying attention to Mapex and their Black Panther redeux, but it seems pretty impressive! I ordered the Fastback, a 7"x12" maple model, which hearkens to the famed Brady Wandoo Block 7"x12" that Charley Drayton used on "Love Shack." I want one of those, but when I could buy 4 of these for the price of a Brady, I'll just have to wait. The Cherry Bomb and Velvetone are next if this thing lives up to the hype!
I'm definitely gonna try this drum out at an upcoming show.

REM 30 Show
If you missed out on the show last night, it was amazing. It's definitely great to play to a sold out show anytime, much less one of this magnitude. I made a youtube playlist of the songs, some with double angles!

Week of Events!
This week has been great! Last Saturday, Beatles For Sale played an awesome birthday party for Tim's 50th.
My Ludwig Legacy Liverpool 4 kit showed up and has that great, woody, classic tone.
Monahan is almost finished with tracking. I laid down the final drum track and its been a wonderful experience. Eric is a fantastic producer for the project and has really helped capture the drum sound and mood that we were looking for.
My Jetta will finally be back up and running tomorrow after getting the part in.
My website launched.
Man. That's a solid week.
Thanks everyone that helps to make it all possible.

Monahan @ Melting Point Photos
The amazing Mike White, DEADLY DESIGNS, came out this past December to shoot photos of the Monahan show with the talented Kate Morrissey, with John Norris. It was a great evening and Mike helped to make it better.
By the way, Mike, we need to game soon.

Chase Park Transduction
MISFORTUNE500 has been in the wonderful studios of Chase Park Transduction today, demoing a third of our new record. AHA drums sounding better than ever with EC2s on top with G2s on bottom, save a G1 on the 12 I believe. My range of Paistes serving me oh so well. Wonderful clean yet complex tone. I got to try out my new solid Sapele shell in my free-floating carrier. Amazing dark, full-bodied, cut.
This is gonna sound so BOSS.
